Zombies are now the Answer to Climate Change: You won’t Believe what Swedish Scientists Think!

Imagine a world where when you die, your body is sent to a meat packing plant to be made into hotdogs and sausages for other humans to eat. Imagine a world where celebrity bodies are hot commodities and sold to the highest bidder. Imagine no burials, and perhaps later on, even no funerals for our dead. Imagine a world where people are murdered for their meat because it’s worth a lot of money on the black market. Seems a bit far-fetched, but Planned Parenthood recently admitted to selling baby parts, so the concept may not be far from reality.

During a recent broadcast on Swedish channel TV4 this week about a fair in Stockholm regarding “food of the future”, scientist Magnus Söderlund claimed eating people after they die may be a good way to fight climate change. No he isn’t joking. During the upcoming event titled “Gastro Summit- about the future of food,” he will hold seminars to discuss the possibility of eating people in order to cut down on greenhouse emissions.

According to his research, the main problem with the idea is the widespread taboo of eating human flesh and said that conservative attitudes could make it hard to convince Swedes at large to take up the practice of cannibalism.

It’s not only taboo. It’s not healthy. Mad Cow Disease: what happens when cows eat cows. Kuru: brain disease caused in humans when eating human brains. Deer get Chronic Wasting Disease. Sheep get scrapie. Prion diseases are no joke.

Well, for one thing, scrapie (and CWD) can be transmitted via ectoparasites. But the most common culprit probably lies in the soil. It turns out that infectious prions can survive for years in soil once they’re deposited. Not only is the decomposition of a carcass a way to infect the soil with the misfolded prions, but CWD proteins are also present in the excreta of infected animals and even antler velvet.
This is a problem, because both scrapie and CWD can be acquired simply by consuming infected soil or grazing on grass containing it. This is most likely the most common way that these prion diseases are acquired naturally–not cannibalism at all, or at least not the sort we commonly think of! It’s a simple fecal-oral route of transmission, albeit one with an alarmingly long potential incubation period.

An individual (animal or human) acquires a prion disease when they consume meat that contains prions (proteins that are mishapen enough to drastically change their functionality), which subsequently causes proteins within the individual to misfold into the same shape as the prion, resulting in a whole slew of problems.
As of right now, there is little knowledge of where prions come from/how they’re formed. Also, there is little knowledge of how inter-species infections/transmissions occur. Researchers are currently investigating various combinations of inter-species transmissions, such as humans eating infected horse meat, or cats eating infected chicken meat, but still know only very little about this phenomenon.

Let’s go back to Mad Cow Disease. Transmittable to humans, it can begin with symptoms of depression and loss of coordination. Later, dementia symptoms appear. These can include serious declines in memory, thinking, and behavior. Common methods to eliminate disease-causing organisms in food, like heat, do not affect prions. Also, prions only seem to live in nervous system tissue.

Worst of all, there’s no cure for vCJD and people usually die within 13 months of showing symptoms. Furthermore, it can take up to 15 years for symptoms to manifest themselves. Mad Cow disease was first discovered in Great Britain in 1986.

So in short, a human may be host to a range of prion infections, some not making their presence known for up to 15 YEARS after infection. This alone should be a turn-off. Let alone the very concept of eating someone’s cousin should have you running.
