Terry Bean, a gay rights activist known for co-founding several national LGBT rights organizations, including the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, has been charged with 2 counts of sodomy and 1 count of sex abuse, involving a 15-year-old Oregon boy.
Bean, who donated more than 500K to Obama’s 2012 re-election bid was arrested at his home in southwest Portland on Wednesday and indicted with two counts of third-degree sodomy and one count of third-degree sex abuse.
The alleged incident involved a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old boy in 2013 in Eugene, Oregon, police said.
Bean’s lawyers insist he is the victim of an ‘extortion ring’, which they claim involves several men ‘known to law enforcement’.
His ex-boyfriend, Kiah Loy Lawson, 25, was also arrested and charged, according to USA Today.-USA Today
Bean’s lawyer, Derek Ashton, was arrested in connection with his representation of Bean in a 2015 sex abuse case.
Ashton was booked shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday into Multnomah County jail in connection with a Lane County warrant on suspicion of violating Oregon’s computer crime statute, according to county records, the Portland Tribune reported.
Portland police worked with the Lane County district attorney to investigate whether Ashton, now a prominent Portland defense lawyer, paid a victim in Bean’s case to make it go away. The earlier case, prosecuting the prominent Democratic donor and gay marriage activist over an alleged hotel-room encounter with a 15-year-old boy in Eugene, collapsed when the victim could not be located to testify.
