Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte threatens war for a shipment of non recyclable garbage that was sent to them by Canada. 2,450 tons of trash, which were labeled as recyclables were shipped to the Philippines in 2013 and 2014.
“I’ll give a warning to Canada maybe next week that they better pull that (trash) out,” he said Tuesday, according to CNN Philippines. “We’ll declare war against them, we can handle them anyway.”
“I cannot understand why they are making us a dump site” said Duterte, who warned that he would sail to Canada and dump the trash there himself, adding: “The garbage is coming home.”
The Philippines has been calling Canada for years to get them to take the garbage back, but their efforts have not been fruitful. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated he was “very much engaged in findig a solution,” but nothing has yet been done.
As Canada’s CBC reports, an environmental law firm in Canada issued a legal opinion last week accusing Canada of being “in violation of the international Basel Convention, which forbids developed nations from sending their toxic or hazardous waste to developing nations without informed consent.”
Duterte said he doesn’t care what Canada does with the garbage: “Eat it if you want to.”
We’ll see if his trash talking gets results.
