Parents who prefer not to vaccinate their children against the current outbreak of Measles in New York face $1000.00 fines, after a ruling upheld Mayor de Blasio’s decision to make the vaccine mandatory for those living close to the center of the outbreak.
Measles is highly contagious. About 90% of people exposed will become ill. This is due to the fact that when someone infected coughs, it stays airborne and active for up to two hours, potentially contaminating anyone walking by.
Hmmm..wonder why the increase? – governing.com
measles cases in the U.S. are on pace to set a record for the most instances in 25 years. The disease was considered eliminated in 2000.
New York is a big city. There are a lot of “passersby.” To think you can simply eliminate the problem by picking on parents is pretty insane. How many “undocumented” people are in New York? Millions. They don’t even have a grasp on who’s living in their city, so it’s rather impossible to ensure everyone in the “center of the outbreak” has been vaccinated in the first place. The way it is transmitted makes it rather impossible as well, a simple sneeze carried on someone’s coat into the main mode of transport, the subway. May as well just tell the whole city to stay home for the next few months.
The MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) Vaccine causes seizures in 1 out of every 3000 doses administered. This would be enough to make me question whether or not I really wanted it.
In 2011, news reports from India publicly stated that only 1 child in 5 vaccinated for measles was actually protected from getting the disease, even after being fully vaccinated.
Outbreaks of measles can still occur in highly vaccinated populations. In 2017, an outbreak of measles occurred among young soldiers in Israel. The primary patient involved in the outbreak had documentation of having received three doses of measles vaccine and the additional eight cases of measles were found to have occurred in persons who reported having, or provided documentation of having, at least 2 doses of a measles containing vaccine.14
Side note: My sisters and I were all vaccinated for MMR. They ended up actually getting Measles…both of them. They had to stay out of the sun and wear sunglasses everywhere they went. I always wondered why I didn’t get the Measles.
Whether you believe in vaccines or not is not the issue here. The issue is being forced to take a drug that definitely can cause a seizure, and that definitely does not even work a lot of the time.
