A new Chinese coronavirus, a cousin of the SARS virus, has infected more than 200 people since an outbreak in Wuhan, China in December. The virus causes antibiotic resistant pneumonia. SARS kills 10% of the individuals infected.
Similar to the common cold, Coronavirus symptoms can include a runny nose, cough, sore throat, headache and fever, which can last for days. For the very young and very old, the virus can cause bronchitis and pneumonia. Some Coronaviruses are deadly.
MERS: Middle East Respiratory Syndrome was first reported in 2012, and also causes respiratory problems, but those symptoms are usually much more severe, and according to the CDC, three to four of every ten patients infected dies.
SARS: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome is another Coronavirus that can cause severe symptoms. According to WHO, it causes respiratory problems, but can also cause fatigue, shortness of breath, and kidney failure. The death rate is dependant on the age of the patient infected. Older people are most vulnerable.
