The Chinese Coronavirus Cover-Up: How Much Did The U.S. Know?

WUHAN, CHINA - JANUARY 22: (CHINA OUT) A family wears masks while walking in the street on January 22, 2020 in Wuhan, Hubei province, China. A new infectious coronavirus known as "2019-nCoV" was discovered in Wuhan as the number of cases rose to over 400 in mainland China. Health officials stepped up efforts to contain the spread of the pneumonia-like disease which medicals experts confirmed can be passed from human to human. The death toll has reached 17 people as the Wuhan government issued regulations today that residents must wear masks in public places. Cases have been reported in other countries including the United States, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. (Photo by Getty Images)

The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) secretly determined they likely were facing a pandemic from a new coronavirus, the city of Wuhan in the Hubei province at the epicenter of the disease hosted a mass banquet for tens of thousands of people; millions began traveling through for Lunar New Year celebrations (January 14-20).

General Secretary Xi Jinping—the actual state title is goujia zhix: “state chairman;” the English translation “president” is a misnomer and not used in China—warned the public on the seventh day (Jan. 20). Based on retrospective infection data , more than 3,000 people had been infected
during almost a week of public silence, to say nothing of the approximate 430,000 Chinese nationals that flew on direct flights from Wuhan to the U.S. after CCP disclosed the outbreak  of the coronavirus.

The question that is apparently on the average person’s mind is why was information of the present pandemic botched up? The answer is that is was never mishandled because, as evidence is now being made apparent, Chinese officials had calculated global spread of the virus; and the U.S. State Department appears to be a complicit actor in this.

According to a Washington Post report this week , U.S. Embassy officials warned as early as January 19, 2018, about inadequate safety at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) lab, in addition to scientists conducting risky research on coronavirus from bats.

The U.S. embassy in Beijing had sent U.S. science diplomats to the WIV lab, which had distinguished itself in 2015 as “China’s first laboratory to achieve the highest level of international bio-research safety (known as BSL-4). WIV issued a news release in English about the last of these visits, which occurred on March 27, 2018… Last week, WIV  erased  that statement from its website, though it remains archived on the Internet.” The U.S. officials on the trip were so concerned by what they saw that they sent two diplomatic cables labelled Sensitive But Unclassified back to Washington.

The first cable, which was obtained by the Post, also sent red flags about the laboratory’s work on bat coronaviruses and more specifically how their potential human transmission represented the risk of a new SARS-like pandemic. The January 19 cable written by two officials from the embassy’s environment, science and health sections who met with the WIV scientists, stated: “During interactions with scientists at the WIV lab, they noted the new lab has a serious shortage of appropriately trained technicians and investigators needed to safely operate this high- containment laboratory.”

What makes this more disturbing is that the cable also called attention to  Shi Zhengli, the head of the research project, who in November 2017 published a paper that showed the horseshoe bats collected from a case in Yunnan province were most likely from the same bat population that had
been behind the first SARS coronavirus in 2003.

A suspicion raised by so many is that, just like 80 percent of our active pharmaceutical ingredients that are Made in China, was the COVID-19 a bio-chemical weapon created by the CCP? —Although I wish in this article to focus on the alleged coronavirus cover-ups, the query of a bio-chemical weapon is nevertheless relevant. While Fox News reported on the likelihood that it was “not [created] as a bioweapon, but as part of China’s effort to demonstrate that its efforts to identify and combat viruses are equal to or greater than the capabilities of the United States,” the independent Chinese media outlet Caixin Global says otherwise. It reported back on February 29 that Chinese laboratories had in fact identified a mystery virus—later identified as COVID-19—to be a highly infectious new pathogen by late December 2019. But they were ordered to stop further testing, destroy samples, and suppress the news to the fullest extent possible.

Dr. Francis Boyle , a professor of international law at the University of Illinois College of Law who drafted the U.S. Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989, believes that “the coronavirus that we’re dealing with here is an offensive biological warfare weapon .”

It is more than common knowledge that the CCP, notwithstanding being a signatory to the United Nations’ Biological Weapons Convention, which bans biological weapons, had long considered the development of bioweapons as a key part of achieving military dominance. This was
affirmed in 2015 by He Fuchu, the vice president of China’s Academy of Military Medical Sciences, who stated that biomaterials were the new “strategic commanding heights” of warfare; by retired General of the People’s Liberation Army Zhang Shibo who in his 2017 book War’s
New High Land, highlighted that “ modern biotchnology development is gradually showing strong signs characteristic of an offensive capability.”

All things being possible, the American people, and for that matter the rest of the world, have a right to know what the State Department knew and how much of this information was withheld from President Donald Trump—the President gave the impression he was kept out of loop of things : “People knew it was happening. And people didn’t want to talk about it.” Incidentally, this would not be the first time covert operations were initially hidden from a president, such as The Bay of Pigs Invasion or The Iran-Contra Affair . It would appear, however, that it will be a while, if ever, to know these facts as per the interview Martha MacCallum of Fox News had with Secretary of Sate Mike Pompeo Wednesday night.

When MacCallum asked Pompeo for an explanation, he said: “The mere fact that we don’t know the answers, that China hasn’t shared the answers, I think is very, very telling. To your point, the President said that there are multiple sources. What we do know is we know that this virus originated in Wuhan, China. We know that there is the Wuhan Institute of Virology just a handful of miles away from where the wet market was. There’s still lots to learn.”

She pressed Pompeo further, charging that U.S. officials “said that it was highly likely that a pandemic could result from how mishandled everything was there. What happened to those cables? Who received them in the State Department? Who went over them in the State Department two years ago?” To which he Pompeo dodged the question:

“Martha, I appreciate you want to ask about that. I can’t comment on the cables tonight. I can say this. This is a laboratory that contained highly contagious materials. We knew that. We knew that they were working on this program. Many countries have programs like this. And in countries that are open and transparent, they have the ability to control and keep them safe and they allow outside observers in to make sure all the processes and procedures are right. I only wish that that had happened in this place. We would know more about it and we would know more about what
has transpired there, if anything, today.”

The fact CCP withheld information about the coronavirus, while horrible, should not surprised us since Chinese officials only care about maintaining their power, even at the cost of its own people. Taking into account this may be the “costliest government cover-up of all time” according to one of the sources, it would be disturbing if U.S. State officials knew about this and
said nothing to the public, especially after U.S. National Institutes of Health, a government agency, awarded a $3.7million research grant a $3.7 million grant to the Wuhan Institute of Virology lab.
