Democrat Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced that Virginia will be making sweeping changes to its high school curriculum. Northam wants to give students a choice between taking US history classes or taking specifically black history classes.
This tweet went viral and people are excited about the news but their is also a large portion of the black community that is not in favor of this change. It has a mixed reaction.
Some responses from the black community on Twitter:
Black history IS American history !@fanceyChancey_ wrote
Exactly, separating the two is like consenting to remaining in two different matrixes, and non accountability of the country
it’s good that it’s being introduced though, hopefully it becomes respectfully merged.@justanotherguy
Why the hell would they give you an option.. this sounds like segregation@samifrederickson
When I was in school black history was a part of US history. It does not sound like separating the two will work out as well as Governor Northam was hoping.
“An effort to change the way citizens of Virginia are educated about history, with a special emphasis on incorporating African American history into the larger narrative, has never been more important,” said the commission in its report.
“The commission shares a strong sense of urgency for policymakers to act and implement the recommendations necessary to achieve a vision for a more just and inclusive Virginia.”
Most of the recommendations are meant to guide a revision of Virginia’s learning standards in 2022, though some will likely be considered as legislation when the General Assembly meets in January.
The Virginia African American History Education Commission was formed in 2019 through an executive order from Northam. It met several times over the last year and held listening sessions with the public.Wtop.com
